In Indiana, we face alarming infant health statistics. In 2022, Indiana had a significant infant mortality rate of 7.2 deaths per 1,000 live births – the seventh-highest rate in the country! One of the ways we can begin to address this crisis is by empowering community-based doulas to provide prenatal, labor, and postnatal support to women in communities with the highest infant mortality rates – LaPorte, St. Joseph, Elkhart, and Marshall with 8.0 deaths per 1,000 live births and Howard, Tipton, Grant, Madison, Blackford, Delaware, Henry, Jay, and Randolph with 7.6 deaths per 1,000 live births.
To help address these disparities, through funding from Elevance Health and in partnership with HealthConnect One’s community-based doula training program, Volunteers of America Ohio & Indiana invite community stakeholders to participate in a community convening on May 13, 2025 at Shepherd Community Center.
This is an excellent opportunity for stakeholders from various sectors, including community leaders, healthcare providers, WIC staff, doulas, and more to learn more about the national best practice model, HealthConnect One for Community Based Doula Programs, and strategic initiatives at Volunteers of America Ohio and Indiana toward bettering infant health.
