In this presentation, we will explore some of the basic concepts behind creating a good choropleth map: quantitative vs. qualitative, classing methods, number of classes, and how to use color more effectively to depict a better cartographic product. We will dive into the Census Bureau’s data platform, data.census.gov, and learn how to retrieve American Community Survey and/or Decennial Census information, and then demonstrate how to map it, utilizing the concepts we have discussed. No previous experience with data.census.gov is necessary to attend this session.
